Recently, the Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the first ever university in Ladakh.

But as per experts, there is a long way to go before such institutions meet the needs of the local people.

Sonam Wangchuk, the legendary social activist and an entrepreneur responded to these local concerns and set up a university in the village of Phyang in Ladakh and named it as the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).

Sonam was soon accompanied by Ms Gitanjali JB, who is a serial entrepreneur, educationist, Odissi and Russian Bolshoi ballet dancer and at the same time possessing a black belt in Karate.

It was almost two years ago that Ms Gitanjali JB, quit her corporate career and moved to the Ladakh region to help the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), after hearing about its alternative education initiative and the scope of its impact on higher education in India.
